Our vision is a society that respects all animals as fellow creatures, showing them compassion and respect.
The German Animal Welfare Federation was founded in 1881 as the umbrella organisation for animal welfare associations and animal shelters in Germany. Today, its affiliates include 16 regional associations and more than 740 local animal welfare associations with over 550 animal shelters /rescue stations and in excess of 800,000 members from all over Germany. This makes the German Animal Welfare Federation Europe’s largest umbrella organisation for animal and nature protection.
Our vision: The abolition of factory farming and the spread of the vegan lifestyle
we are concentrating on the area in which people cause the most suffering and death by far: the use of animals and animal products as food. In countries like Germany it is not necessary for a healthy diet to let animals suffer and die in the production of food. That is why we promote the vegan diet as the best ethical solution. Their widespread dissemination is a lengthy process that requires intermediate steps. That is why we are also committed to a gradual reduction in the consumption of animal products and are also working towards less painful breeding, husbandry and killing of animals.
In order for our work to have the maximum effect, we use scientific findings to develop leverage campaigns, which primarily include the areas of business and consumer information as well as law and politics. At all levels, we take steps with the respective actors towards respectful treatment of the animals and also make it easier for alleged opponents to abandon previous patterns of action. Since it is impossible for a single foundation to do this alone, we cooperate with organizations that pursue compatible goals.
Every year animal and plant species die out and almost always humans are the cause. We do something about it.
The World Conservation Union IUCN lists more than 27,000 species of flora and fauna in its Red List of Endangered Species. The World Biodiversity Council IPBES estimates that even one million species are threatened with extinction. The biggest threats are habitat loss and direct exploitation, eg through fishing, hunting, fishing and deforestation. Our goal is to preserve biodiversity and save animals. The survival of the species in their habitat, but also the protection of the individual animal is important to us. We are committed to better laws and effective wildlife conservation. We stand up for animal protection and species protection. We support aid projects for animals in need, help preserve habitats and attract local populations to protect wildlife.
The goal of the German Animal Welfare Association is that every animal can lead a species-appropriate life. Be it in private households, in agriculture, in research and wherever humans deal with animals. We want animals to be protected in their natural habitats.
In our work for animal welfare we focus on countries and regions with little protection for animals. We aim at improving the situation for animals in long term i. e. by providing veterinary care, by supporting animal sanctuaries and through our educational work.
Advocating for the rights and interests of animals and encouraging society and political stakeholders to end animal suffering. With our educational and political campaigns, we create transparency to establish animal welfare in our society. Our vision is a world where all animals and their needs are respected and protected as part of a just society. Our team in Germany consists of experienced, highly motivated and qualified staff with years of experience in successful campaigning.
Animal Sanctuaries
he Erdlingshof helps earthlings who have fallen prey to the "farm animal" attitude and gives them a safe home.
Regular tours take place in the yard, also for school classes and youth groups. During the guided tours, visitors will learn the stories of the rescued animals and how each individual can contribute to ending animal suffering on their own plates through their own diet.
